Seth - Senior PCB Design Engineer

Meet Seth, our Senior PCB Design Engineer who has worked at ETL for just under 10 years! Seth has worked his way up through ETL to a senior engineering role where he also championed power supply units and switches - providing support for those product ranges. Read more about Seth's engineering career journey at ETL and his most memorable ETL career moment...

I am responsible for... laying out PCB designs and being the Product Champion for Power Supply Units and Switches, this means I am the go to person for any questions or queries my colleagues may have with these product ranges.

My career journey at ETL started... when I arrived as part of the maintenance team helping to lay concrete slabs for an outdoor area being created at ETL. From there I went on to work as an Assembly Technician within production, but quickly progressed my career onward to be a Design Engineer, where I was involved in hardware design for our products. Following this I began testing the new products as an NPI Test Engineer, this then lead on to a move to the PCB team, where I now work as a Senior PCB Design Engineer!

The first thing I like to do when I come into work is... start up my computer and go through my emails to get started on the day well informed.

My typical day... involves liaising between multidiscipline groups within ETL to either understand PCB requirements or guide new PSU/Switch concept developments with customers. I also provide PSU/Switch product support internally and externally, and when required offer guidance / insight to my peers within the team.

The best part of my job is... working on a PCB project from start to finish, being able to keep to deadlines and having it work first time without any issues or faults; a hole in one!

The biggest challenge I have... is keeping track of my Product Champion responsibilities, whilst also working on complicated or numerous PCB Designs. There is a lot of communication on going all the time, so sometimes it’s challenging to not drop one of the spinning plates!

Most memorable moment in my career...is being involved in the large NOAA Enigma Matrix system project a few years ago. I was addressing representatives from NASA and NOAA, and the American government to achieve approval for system layout designs. It was very exciting being involved with such high-profile customers.

Top piece of career advice...never be afraid to take on new responsibilities, especially if you think they may be beyond you. Ask questions and look for support from your peers and leaders when you need it!
